"Any idea when you're chatting with the band?" an inquiry arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

There is only a single issue: The author likewise wants to be Haim's fourth member. What's more, we are in plentiful company. A host of famous admirers have publicly begged for the position.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career doing sets at small eateries with their family. Today, they are multiple Grammy Award hopefuls.

Like all the greatest ensembles, they're a close trio. Their music videos repeatedly depict them walking in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such unfettered happiness you can't help but think, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a guitar'," states Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That is the biggest compliment. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate people to make music."

"And thus everyone are welcome to be the honorary member of Haim."

Historic Nod

The group are connecting from a break, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in consideration for the award.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the honor is deeply felt by the trio.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge milestone," says Alana. "But we're just grateful for the women that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The album came out of a period of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that strange transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The words detail departures and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in the moment who they are becoming.

"I adore description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to make an effort in blocking the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Style

That developed toughness called for a fresh approach – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The band's openness inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic horror stories.

One man ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Path

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an international audience.

But the sister act will forever be their number one commitment.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was four," says Alana. "It's like no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
